Not in the Way You May Think

My boss announced today our company was going to a four-day workweek. Silently I thought “Yeah.” I looked around at the rest of my co-workers and they looked happy too. My boss, Miss Othmar, said she’d have more details at the end of the day. As we headed back to our desks, I could see everyone breaking off into different huddles talking. I met up with my best friend at the office, Nellie. “What do you think?”, I asked her. She ranted of going on long weekend trips with her husband — who works a four-day workweek. I interrupted her. “I hear my phone ringing” [my phone wasn’t ringing]. I sat at my desk thinking about what I could do with a long weekend. “I always wanted to go to bingo night Thursdays!” I couldn’t before because I was afraid, I would be late to work the next morning. “What to do on Fridays? I can sleep in. The movie theatre has half off Fridays.” I thought of a bunch of stuff. The end of the day came, and Nellie and I headed for the conference room with everyone else. Miss Othmar walked in as we were giddy with our three-day weekend plans. She stood in front of the room as we calmed down. “Okay, everyone, we are going on a four-day workweek.” We all hoorayed in unison. She continued. You will have Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday off. “What!” I looked at Nellie. She looked at me. “There goes Sunday football! No Bingo for me!” “Four-day workweeks suck!”
