Did we have to spend so much money on the 2022 Primaries?

OpenSecrets projects a combined state and federal cost to exceed a staggering $16.7 billion.¹ That’s a billion with a “b”. We weren’t even voting for president! Thanks, Supreme Court!

$1.3 billion. Just on five senate races? Pennsylvania, Arizona, Wisconsin, Ohio, and Georgia. Which will spend even more after the runoff election. Come on!

Spending billions on ballot measures! What happened to reading the initiative and filling in the yes or no bubble? Gambling, abortion, voter ID, guns, or marijuana. Do we really need to spend a bunch of money for TV ads to drill us on issues we already know about?

I have some money-saving suggestions. End lawn signs that litter landfills. Billboards are a driver’s worst distraction. Those flyers you get in the mail are a waste of the post office’s resources. They end up in a landfill too! And TV ads are not only filled with a bunch of lies most people don’t see them as they get up and get a cold beer. Or invest in TV services without ads.

Election paraphernalia — buttons, hats, flags, bumper stickers? More landfill fodder. It’s not the 1980s anymore.
